It’s time to start planning for SXSW. The annual Music Industry Festival draws over 2,500 “official” performers/bands and over 20,000 registrants to Austin, Texas each March. To navigate this madness properly, one must organize and prioritize while still leaving room to live spontaneously. You never know who’s going to be stopping in Austin for a last minute performance or if that band you’ve never heard of turns out to be your favorite find.
This post is about the bands I’m excited to see. These are mostly new(ish) bands so maybe you’ll look at this and be all like “shoo, where’s Dave Grohl? Doesn’t she know he’s gonna be here this year?” Yeah – I know, and I do like me some Dave Grohl. But these are a just a few of the bands that get me excited. Not only are they bands I listen to in my free time, but they are also accessible, cheery and very appropriate for many of my client’s playlists. And that makes my job fun.
This band is sweet summer fun from California. Watch for their full length album out in April on Secretly Canadian Records.
Brother and Sis breeze through reggae infused pop. Full Length album, Isles, out in March on Columbia Records.
A good friend aptly called this band “The Kinks meet Belle & Sebastian.” I also think of 70’s Stephen Schwartz musicals (this is an awesome thing in my opinion). Their debut album, We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors, is out on Jagjaguwar now.
Originally from Australia, they call themselves “garage disco.” It’s a little electro, a little pop and a dash of dreamy but always fun and catchy. Truly Alive on Future Classic is out now.
From Nashville, their new record You Belong Here came out in late January. I expect to see their single “Spotlight” in some commercials this summer.
Writers of the cutest song of all time.
