Monika Christdoulou, a huge pop star in Greece, is known simply as Monika. Her story about coming to America and looking up the Daptone records headquarters in Brooklyn is crazy! She knocked on the door and Homer Steinwiess (a founding member of the Dap-Kings) answered. A connection sparked and the next phase of Monika’s career was born. Homer produced her record, Secret in the Dark.

The thing that’s extra cool about this story is that Homer’s sound is nothing like her record (or at least that’s what I would have thought). Clearly Homer has got it going on! Her music is leftfield disco-dark disco, its 80’s pop. I think its amazing. The musicianship is great. The record is interesting.

My favorite track is “Secret in the Dark.” We’ve been slaying this cut for awhile now for our fashion forward accounts. “Get Out of My Way” is pretty killer too. Funky spaced out drama.

Check her out…
