My fellow Music Designers at Mood have been remembering past favorite “summer songs” and predicting the song of Summer 2014. Will “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea be as pervasive this year as last year’s “Blurred Lines?”
My favorite summer song of all time is “Summer in the City” by The Lovin’ Spoonful. Today when I hear it, I remember the hot asphalt sticking to the bottoms of my flip-flops as we ran across the street. I hear that chord change from minor to major on the chorus and I am transported back to that deep yearning to be grown and dancing with a boy on the rooftop on a hot summer night.
One of my areas of expertise is country music. I have picked the song of the summer for country music for 2014 to be Kenny Chesney’s “American Kids.” It’s written by a multi-Grammy winner Shane McAnally (along with Rodney Clawson and Luke Laird), a man that knows his way around a good hook. Within one month of being released, “American Kids” barreled its way to the Top 10 of the country charts. Hear it once and you’ll have Kenny singing in your head all day.
