After a three year hiatus Solange is back with “Losing You,” an African flavored, melancholy synth track. “Tell me the truth boy, am I losing you for good?” Solange pleads in the chorus as a relaxed hand clap beat snaps in the background. This is one more step in defining herself as an artist away from her superstar sister, Beyonce. Solange’s pipes may not be as raw or powerful as her big sis, but what she lacks in vocals she makes up in creativity, layered harmonies and by experimenting with different sounds. Produced by Blood Orange and Kevin Barnes, this moody track is never rushed or cluttered. Despite its dismal subject matter the song would fit right in at your neighborhood block party.
Directed by Melina Matsoukas (Rihanna’s “We Found Love” and Christina Aguilera’s “Your Body”), the video shows Solange prancing in bright, retro outfits and partying with the locals in Cape Town, South Africa. This may not be the most glamorous locale to shoot a music video, but it fully captures the “party is what you make of it” mentality. Inspired by nu wave and electronica, look for Solange’s next release via Terrible Records.
