“Your drums, we’re drumming, your drums” sounds out in a strangely altered computerized voice introducing Aluna Francis’ soothing voice. Francis makes up half of the emerging group, AlunaGeorge with George Reid’s (from indie band Colour) vibrant production rounding it out.
Hailing from London, AlunaGeorge’s first commercial release “Your Drums, Your Love” starts with a meager beginning building layers to the last chorus, finally begging you to sing along. Reid carefully crafts his placement of electronic blips and synths incorporating more as the song continues on with its syncopated drums. He understands the delicacy of his band mate’s voice and accentuates it in his production instead of overpowering it.
“I’ve been treading water for your love,” implores an overlaid vocal wave from Francis. With song choruses getting weaker by the year, sometimes lazily just repeating a single word or phrase, this track brings back the magic of storytelling through songwriting. Aluna Francis’ warm, sultry vocals are the bonus prize.
Bringing a funky garage, R&B vibe with an accompanying video that only adds to its momentum (which seems to be almost one continuous shot) AlunaGeorge is at the top of my list of upcoming releases for 2013. With no definitive release set quite yet, keep your eyes and ears peeled for BodyMusic, out later this year on Island Records. Meanwhile, “Your Drums, Your Love” is available now!
