“Psychedelic Funk Ragga Reggae Dance Soul music” is how Mustafa Akbar, vocalist for Nappy Riddem, describes their hybrid sound. The trio met while performing with downtempo “ambassadors of style”, Thunderball, and though signed to Fort Knox Recordings, they fondly refer to Thievery Corporation’s ESL Music label as “family”. In fact, Nappy Riddem’s debut album, One World Sovereignty, features several artists from their combined families, including Rob Myers (Thievery Corporation, Fort Knox Five, Thunderball), Frank Mitchell Jr. (Thievery Corporation, See-I) and Asheru (Unspoken Heard, “Boondocks” theme song). Their liberated sound and joyful attitude will have listeners wishing they too were part of that elite family of electro-pioneers.
