Tom Petty Show!
Nose bleeds are ok
Sign language rockers

I sure love writing haiku poetry that makes no sense! On Cinco de Mayo I was lucky enough to attend Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ very last stop on the American portion of their 2012 world tour.

What do you need me to say about Tom Petty that hasn’t already been said? He is one of the most consistent song writers of our time. Think about it – the first album gave us “American Girl” and “Breakdown”; album two – “Listen To Her Heart”; Third – “Refugee,” “Here Comes My Girl,” “Even The Losers,” “Don’t Do Me Like That” (!); Fourth – “The Waiting”; Fifth – “You Got Lucky”;  Sixth – “Don’t Come Around Here No More”; Seventh – Okay…so this one doesn’t have a huge hit, but it was after they toured as Bob Dylan’s backing band and there is DEFINITELY some influence there; Eighth (and first solo record) – “Free Fallin’,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Runnin’ Down A Dream”; Ninth – “Learning To Fly,” “Into The Great Wide Open”; TENTH – “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” “You Wreck Me”; Eleventh – …you get my point. This is what American icons are made of, folks.

The stage was set with a simple red curtain around all sides, the Heartbreakers were incredible, and the audience ate up every note from Mike Campbell’s guitar. At one point I thought that Mr. Petty was hitting the booze a little hard from all of his stumbling, but who cares? The music was incredible. Maybe that’s just another nod to his professionalism – “drunk and old? No problem, let me amaze you really quick.” – A fictional non-quote.  I’d like to see Chris Martin pull that off. Maybe it’d make his songs more interesting.

So, because I’m a little bit of a nerd, I took the time to write down the set list for you. What I also did was put together a public Spotify playlist of it for your listening pleasure.

Listen To Her Heart
You Wreck Me
I Won’t Back Down
Here Comes My Girl
Handle With Care [Yep! A Traveling Wilburys song.]
Lover’s Touch
I’m A Man
Something Big
Saving Grace
Free Fallin’
It’s Good To Be King
Something Good Coming
Learning To Fly [A Beautiful acoustic version – it’s on the playlist, so listen!]
Yer So Bad
I Should Have Known It
Good Enough
Runnin’ Down A Dream

Mary Jane’s Last Dance
American Girl

There you have it. No “The Waiting” though!? Someone fly me to Europe, so I can see him play that one, and “Rockin’ Around (With You).” I guess for a man with that many hits, it’s impossible to completely satisfy everyone. All in all, one of the best shows I have seen and definitely one to cross off of the bucket list.

Oh, and “sign language rockers” is a nod to the sign language interpreter with the sweet dance moves; definitely one of my favorite parts of going to larger shows. I think what they do is wonderful.

Tom Petty, if you’re reading this – you’re not old! I meant “seasoned.”
