Having already made an impression on the indie rock world as the front man of Elefant, Diego Garcia has built upon his musical past and brought in a new Latin flavor for his solo project. His debut solo album Laura, released in April 2011, “conjures the spirit of 1970’s troubadours like Sandro and Jobim as well as singer-songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Harry Nilsson” and was named one of the best albums of 2011 by NPR, iTunes, KCRW, WXPN, and more. The first single from the album, “You Were Never There,” was co-written with Dhani Harrison (George Harrison’s son) and shows the distinct shift in Garcia’s musical mentality.
On April 19th, we invited Diego Garcia to our Austin office, where he performed a few songs from Laura acoustically in our lobby. He also sat down in our new Knittel Lounge for an interview with Music Designer (and fan) Anita Benner. They talked about the transition from Elefant to his solo career, working with producer Jorge Elbrecht (Violens) and his artist vision for Laura, what it was like to record at George Harrison’s castle, and more.
